Help Google understand when products are on sale
Google continues to expand the structured data to "close the gap" between schema.org and Merchant Center feed spec. It would only make sense for Google to include ListPrice
as an option for Merchant Listings.
What does this mean for you?
Easily tell Google the product is on sale by including the ListPrice
in the structured data.
With this update, JSON-LD for SEO can include your Compare-at price from Shopify as well as the current price in the structured data.
In the past, we've depended on Google's algorithm to keep track of price changes and potentially award stores with a price change Rich Result like the one below.
It's still up to Google's algorithm whether they show a price change in Rich Results or not, but this makes it easier for them to track.
Additionally, Merchant Center can use your structured data instead of or in addition to your product feed to get your product listings in front of customers.
Not all merchants can or want to show the regular price and we get that every store is different.
As such, you must turn on the setting in JSON-LD for SEO to include the Compare-at price.
If your current price and the Compare-at price are the same, that's fine too. Turning this setting on will not negatively impact your SEO. It helps Google to understand your pricing structure and easily recognize when or if the product does go on sale.
Ready to add structured data to your Shopify store? I recommend installing JSON-LD for SEO if Google is coming to your store and you want to make SEO part of your marketing strategy.
