Bulk importing links with Linking Llama

By Ilana Davis

To make the process of getting links into Linking Llama faster, I recommend importing links in bulk using a comma-separated values (CSV).

Step 1: Build your CSV

You can use this sample CSV file to use as a template. Remember to delete row 2 (the sample data) before importing your file. Do not delete the column headers.

Required Columns

  • Column A: Link A handle
  • Column B: Link A type
  • Column C: Link B handle
  • Column D: Link B type
  • Column E: Product Availability

Adding links

From Shopify, we only need your URL handles. You can build your CSV from scratch or if you are doing a lot of product links at once, you can export your products from Shopify to grab the handles.

I don't recommend typing the handles in manually as this leaves room for human error and the handle must match exactly for the import to work.

Handles: use the last part of your url. For example:

  • If your product URL is example.com/products/black-tie then your handle would be black-tie.
  • If your collection url is example.com/collections/formal-wear then your handle would be formal-wear.
  • If your blog post URL is example.com/blogs/news/an-update then your handle would be news/an-update

Type: enter either product, collection, or article. Currently products, collections, and blog posts are able to be linked but as we add more page types, this will be updated.

Product Availability: can be blank or available. Leaving this field blank will link to both available and unavailable products. Using available means only available products will be linked. More information on the product availability setting can be found in this article.

Bulk import example for Linking Llama. Link A Handle = articles/link-one-of-a-kind-products-to-other-collections-or-products. Link A Type = article. Link B Handle = linking-llama. Link B Type = product.

Saving the file

We only accept CSV so make sure you save the file as a CSV.

Before uploading your CSV, verify that it matches the CSV file format. If the format and headings don't match, the import will fail.

Step 2: Upload your CSV file

From the Imports tab inside of the Linking Llama app, select New Import. Selecting Imports and then New Import button to begin the process of importing links into Linking Llama

Select Browse to locate the CSV file you wish to upload.

Then select Import to begin the import process.

Select the Browse button to find the csv file on your computer.

Failed Imports: Possible Reasons

  • Links cannot link back to themselves. Make sure you columns A and C are different.
  • Handles must be exact. Check for spelling errors and extra spaces.
  • Do not include the full URL. If your product URL is example.com/products/black-tie then your handle would be black-tie.
  • Do not include /blogs/ in the article handle.
  • Files must be using the CSV format.

Add theme section

If you haven't already, finish Step 2 of Setting Up Linking Llama by adding the theme section to your live theme in Shopify's Theme Customizer.
